Value Analysis

This is an image by Diego Rivera Study of a Sleeping Woman.  It was selected from the book:  Drawing:  A Contemporary Approach, chapter three.  Value is a very important tool in art, because it allows artists to create expressive pieces of artwork.  Value shows emotions, space, and helps deepen texture.  In this photo, value is used to describe space within the woman's body as her figure overlaps and changes weight.  In the face of the woman, value is used to depict emotions--the shading shows tiredness, age, and emotions.
