My Ideal Image

This painting by Henri de Toulouse Lautrec is an example of an ideal image in my opinion.  I find the wide range of colors to be inspiring, and as a kindergarten teacher, I'm always encouraging more colors and never stress exact lines or dimensions.  This image is subjective, and that's exactly why I like it.  It's evident what is in the image; however, it is up to the viewer to determine what is happening in the scene.

In the first chapter of Drawing:  A Contemporary Approach, it discusses what drawings are used for or classified as.  I find this image to be able to be classified in all four types--it is investigating the real world (a night or day in a cafe); it is recording and event; it is communicating ideas (as all images do in some way); also, it could be an image from memory.  I believe this image comes from the impressionist genre, and it portrays aspects of Toulouse Lautrec's imagination.
